Here’s why a sugar scrub is your secret to glowing skin

As we age, our skin cell turnover slows down, making exfoliation an important part of a glowing body care routine. Pampering and invigorating, a good weekly body scrub session is as soothing for the senses as it is smoothing for your skin.

Body scrubs of the past were a little too harsh, but our latest innovation promises sweet, glowing results, while still coddling skin. Here's the 101 on our Bali Buffing Sugar, for gorgeous, baby-smooth skin from top-to-toe.

Regular exfoliation helps boost blood circulation and improves the appearance of stretch marks

Why you need a sugar scrub

Exfoliating your face at least once a week is a no-brainer for a smooth, refined and radiant complexion. But don’t forget your body! Your B.O.D. needs a little TLC as well, and a body scrub is your shower’s MVP.

Using gritty little skin sloughers like sugar, salt, coffee grinds, pumice and ground shell, a body scrub helps manually remove dead skin cells to reveal fresh, smooth, glowing skin. And if it’s formulated with nourishing coconut oil and other skin-loving ingredients like our Glow Figure Bali Buffing Sugar? The results are supercharged!

If you suffer from body acne, a body scrub helps to unclog pores and prevent future breakouts. Scrubbing before shaving or waxing (and in the days afterwards) helps to prevent those nasty in-grown hairs. As any bronzed babe knows, body scrubbing is also essential prep for your self-tanner – preventing patchiness, extending the life of your tan and ensuring an even fade.

Booty a bit bumpier than you’d like? By helping to boost circulation, regular use of a body scrub can also visibly reduce cellulite! And, with the right ingredients, it can also improve the appearance of stretch marks and reduce dark spots. So, what are you waiting for?!

How to use a sugar scrub for glowing skin

Like all good things in life, body scrubbing can get a little messy – so jump in the shower before you get started. Grab a handful or mitt-full of your sugar scrub (ours comes with a Jelly Massage Mitt for an added circulation boost – you’re welcome!) and apply to damp skin in a circular motion.

Massage your scrub in circles from your feet to your neck, moving towards the heart to promote circulation. This means massaging from the feet to the torso, and from the fingers up the arms towards the shoulders. Make sure you show some extra love to dry areas like your elbows and knees. And give those problem spots (butt, tummy, thighs) a workout to get the blood flowing and help fight cellulite!

Rinse your body scrub off thoroughly with lukewarm water to reveal your soft, supple, glowing skin. And remember to slather on a body lotion like our contouring Glow Figure Moisture Body Whip straight away, as your freshly buffed skin will soak in the goodness!

When to use a sugar scrub

Obviously, you should use your scrub any time your skin feels or looks dry, dull, bumpy, flaky or uneven. But, for best results and to reduce bumps and stretch marks, we recommend getting in the habit of body scrubbing two to three times weekly.

If your skin is sensitive, start by exfoliating your body once a week. And always do a patch test before your first use.

Filled with glowing natural properties, our sugar scrub is perfect for even the most sensitive skins.

Why are sugar scrubs best for the body?

Before you get scrubbing, you should know that body scrubs aren’t created equal. Some – such as those using nut shells – have rough, large or sharp particles that can cause microtears in the skin. This can lead to damage of the skin barrier, which plays an important role in keeping irritants and allergens OUT while locking moisture IN.

To smooth skin without causing any damage? Make sugar scrubs – like our Bali Buffing Sugar – your glow-to! With small, naturally abrasive particles, sugar scrubs deliver an intensive – yet gentle – exfoliation. Melting on contact with the skin, sugar is an ideal body scrub ingredient even for those with sensitive skin.

A humectant, sugar attracts water to the skin’s surface – from deeper layers of the skin or the air – for increased hydration. And, as if that weren’t sweet enough, sugar is also a natural source of glycolic acid. A highly prized AHA, glycolic acid helps dissolve the intercellular ‘glue’ that keeps dead skin cells hanging around. Outstaying their welcome and dulling your natural glow.
