5 Ways to Fight Dry, Frizzy Hair

Sick of battling to keep the frizz at bay by midday, despite leaving home with smooth strands in the morning? You’re not alone – as many a meme or a stroll down any haircare aisle will tell you. In the chemist or the supermarket, you’ll see countless products claiming to eradicate frizz. But – trust us – there’s no single silver bullet. Not even strand-smoothing silicone. 

Transforming unruly hair takes a holistic approach – and this article will tell you where to start. From rethinking your washing routine to selecting the best type of prods, here are 5 ways to fight dry, frizzy hair. Especially when the humidity is soaring.

Why so frizzy?

Caused by a lack of moisture in your strands, frizz can – and does – happen to anyone. It’s most common in curlier hair types that are naturally more prone to dryness. However, it can occur in any hair that’s dry or damaged from heat styling or bleaching – including poker-straight locks.

If you’re prone to frizz, you’ll have noticed things get extra unruly when it’s damp or humid. This is because dry hair drinks up excess moisture from the air, leaving you with the kind of halo you definitely didn’t order.  

While there’s not a lot you can do about the weather (we wish), there’s no need to hide under a hat. Here are some simple steps you can take to hydrate, tame and smooth your strands – from the inside out.

1. Give your scalp some love

Healthy, hydrated hair starts at the roots – so try incorporating a scalp scrub into your frizz-fighting routine once or twice weekly. 3. Use heat protectant – always!

We’re not going to tell you to skip heat styling, but – for the love of all things smooth and non-frizzy – don’t even think about it if you’re out of heat protectant! Creating a protective barrier between your hair and hot tool, heat protectant sprays or serums are a must to seal in moisture and help minimise dryness and damage. 4. Avoid over-washing and hot water

If you’re fighting a constant war against frizz, reconsider washing your hair for the second day in a row. And turn the water temperature down to lukewarm while you’re at it. Washing hair too regularly can strip strands of natural shine-enhancing, smoothing oils. While hot water lifts the hair cuticle – allowing humid air to penetrate the shaft and wreak havoc.

5. Switch out your towel

Another factor could be exacerbating your frizz – and it’s hiding in plain sight in your bathroom. A regular terry cotton towel might look innocent, but it creates friction when drying your strands. Roughing up the cuticle, it can result in snagging, frizz and breakage. Especially if you use a vigorous drying action.

Instead, swap to a microfibre towel to reduce damage, help prevent frizz and even speed up drying.
